Choosing a financial adviser

Looking for a financial adviser? Follow our guidelines to make sure you make a good choice.

Making decisions about which supplier to use is never easy, so you may wish to consider the following advice when choosing your financial adviser:

  • Review your current financial situation and make sure you know what you hope to achieve and how much you are willing to spend.
  • Choose a financial adviser that specialises in the type and size of work that you want carried out.
  • Make sure you know the difference between information and advice. Advice may give you certain rights and protection - ask your adviser about this.
  • Ask for a written quote of costs and whether it will be on a fee or commission basis.
  • Ask what experience the adviser has in the area you are interested.
  • If you want a broker to find a loan or credit agreement, you can request a refund of any brokerage fees (less £5) if no agreement is entered into. For more information visit http://www.oft.gov.uk/advice_and_resources/resource_base/legal/cca/brokerage-fees .
