Keep a Clear Head When Buying a PC, Advises Consumer Direct.
As the new academic year gets underway, Consumer Direct East Midlands, the government's consumer helpline, is offering advice to all students and parents thinking about buying or upgrading their PC or laptop.
Last year, Consumer Direct East Midlands received over 1,898 complaints from the region's consumers about PCs, accessories and software, with complaints peaking in September, October and November.
Sara Barry, Consumer Direct East Midlands Manager said: 'Computer technology is changing all the time so buying a computer can be an expensive and confusing purchase. With so many products available, it helps to do your homework and lots of planning before you buy to avoid problems later on.'
In order to help students and parents avoid some of the common pitfalls, Consumer Direct East Midlands has put together a list of things to consider when buying a new PC.
Before you buy
- Do some research before you buy – compare different models and prices, and ask friends and family for recommendations.
Where to buy
- There are a number of different ways in which you can buy your PC. The best advice is to shop around to find the best deal for you.
- If you buy online make sure you receive an order confirmation via email and keep a copy of it.
- When buying online or over the phone you may be entitled to a seven day cooling off period after the computer is delivered so you get a chance to check the goods over and cancel if it is not what you want.
Tips on buying your PC
- Think beforehand about what you want your PC to do and decide your budget. Don't buy a more complex PC than you need, but at the same time think about what you might want it to do in the future. This will save you time and money in the long-term.
- Consider the level of after-sales support you will need in setting up and running your PC and check the different levels and cost of any helpline services that retailers offer.
- If buying on credit, shop around because your seller may not offer the best deal. Ensure you read the contract and check the terms and conditions carefully before you sign.
- If you purchase your PC using a credit card or finance agreement, you may have additional protection.
- When ordering, make sure that you get and keep copies of all receipts, details of the order, confirmations, correspondence and order numbers of your PC purchase.
- When buying online, make sure that the company has a UK contact address and telephone number and keep a record of it in case you need to contact them.
- Always read the terms and conditions and small print on any forms. Make sure you know what your terms and conditions cover and what they do not.
- If you are upgrading your system, check that the components are compatible. Have a list of your computer's specifications with you to compare with the products that you wish to buy.
