Trick or treat? Don't get spooked by Halloween dangers.

Halloween should be a time of devilish fun and festivity - for both adults and children. But Consumer Direct East Midlands is warning people to watch out for dangerous costumes and accessories and has advice for parents to make sure children stay safe this Halloween.

So far this year the Consumer Direct East Midlands helpline and its Advisors have received just over 1100 calls about toys and a few simple checks could make a big difference in helping to prevent accidents and injuries at this time of year.

Sara Barry, Consumer Direct East Midlands Manager said: 'Costumes and treats are all part of the fun of Halloween - but safety should still be a priority. Toy-related injuries can often be prevented. Its important for parents to take the time to read the labels on Halloween costumes and accessories carefully and choose toys that are appropriate for the age of the child.'

For a safe Halloween, without any nasty surprises, Consumer Direct East Midlands has these tips to help parents pick the perfect Halloween costume or gift:

  • Buy toys and costumes from reputable traders.
  • Avoid toys or costumes that are much cheaper than you would expect. Bargains may be dangerous!
  • Look for a CE mark. If there isn't one, it's not intended for children.
  • Check that costumes and masks are fire retardant.
  • To reduce the risk of accidents think about the suitability of the toy for the child's age and ability.
  • Watch out for warning notices that tell you what age groups the toy is unsuitable for. A toy or costume that's fun for an eight-year-old might pose safety risks for a two-year-old.
  • Be alert for hazards such as sharp points and edges, and small parts that can come loose and become a choking hazard.
