Used car matching

The scam

You want to sell your car and place an ad for it. Someone calls you claiming to have an immediate buyer. They may ask for an upfront fee of up to £100 for 'matching' you with the buyer. They say the fee is refundable if your car isn't sold.

If you pay, in most cases the promised buyer never turns up, and neither does the promised refund.

Thousands of people are caught by this scam every year.

Protect yourself

  • If someone calls you with an offer like this, don't get pressured into anything. Say no or just hang up.
